Type Locality: USA, California, San Luis Obispo Co., Carrizo Plain, Painted Rock, 20 [=25.5] mi (32 km) SE of Simmler.
Vernacular Names: Giant Kangaroo Rat.
Distribution: Western edge of Joaquin Valley, adjacent Carrizo and Elkhorn plains and upper Cuyama Valley of WC California ( USA).
Conservation: U.S. ESA Endangered; IUCN – Critically Endangered; and California Dept. of Fish and Game – Endangered. Extirpated over much of its original range.
