Discussion. Gerecke (2003) based a redescription of Atractides fluviatilis , a species for which the type material is lost, on specimens (SMF 4974) from Stobrec, Croatia, which had been published as the first records after the original description of this species (K. Viets 1936). From this material he deduced the presence of a striated integument as a diagnostic character, while Szalay gave no information on this character state in the original description. Instead, in a redescription of A. fluviatilis based on specimens from Balkan ( Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia) and Iran, Pesic et al. (2004) followed Lundblad’s (1956) opinion who stated that the integument structure of A. fluviatilis should be lineated as in A. panniculatus . The specimens described by these authors resemble more closely Szalay's figure, having the Ac arranged in a curved line rather than in an obtuse triangle as in SMF 4974 (see Gerecke 2003). As Szalay (1964) provided Lundblad’s (1956) figure in his description of A. fluviatilis , he obviously followed Lundblad’s interpretation of this species, with the consequence that the specimens from Croatia and Israel attributed by Gerecke (2003) to A. fluviatilis in fact represents an undescribed species ( Pesic et al. 2004).

The specimens from Vrgoracko Polje ( Croatia) are in good agreement with the specimens attributed by Viets (1936) to A. fluviatilis which are described under the name of A. stankovici nov. sp. as representatives of the previously misunderstood species. In the striated integument, presence of a slight protrusion of the ventrodistal margin of P-2 and the sword seta of P-4 located near the distoventral hair, A. stankovici resembles A. diastema ( Szalay, 1935) , a little documented species known only from a single female specimen ( Szalay 1935, Gerecke 2003). From A. stankovici , A. diastema differs in considerably lower measurement values (data from the original description—e.g., L I-L-5/6 233/183), S-2 strongly thickened in the basal third, a less slender I-L- 6 and smaller Ac (maximum diameter <40µm, calculated from Szalay’s figure).

The specimens from Israel attributed by Gerecke (2003) to A. fluviatilis agreed in most measurements with the specimens from Croatia, but males differ in their genital field strongly reduced in size, a shorter palp and a lower I-L-5/6 ratio, and females in minor measurement values of genital field, palp and I-L-5/6, a more slender S-1, a shorter S-2 and more slender I-L-5 (see Gerecke 2003 for measurements). The variability range of these characters should be checked in additional populations from Near East and the Balkan before we can assess the taxonomic state of these specimens. As a consequence, the definition of A. stankovici sp. nov. is restricted to character states and measurements here described for specimens from Croatia.

Palp ( Figs. 7A–B View FIGURE 7 ): total L 294, dL and %L (in parentheses): P-1, 24 (8.2); P-2, 69 (23.5); P-3, 76 (25.9); P-4, 96 (32.7); P-5, 29 (9.9); L ratio P-2/P-4, 0.72; P-2 and P-3 both with straight ventral margins, and pointed ventrodistal tips, P-4 ventral margin divided by setae insertions into three concave sectors 1:1:2, both ventral seta insertions surrounded by tubercular protrusions, sword seta near distoventral seta.

I-Leg ( Fig. 6C View FIGURE 6 ): I-L-5 and -6 little modified, I-L-5 with subparallel dorsal and ventral margins, S-1 and -2 short, homoiomorphic, apically knob-shaped, inserted side by side (no interspace visible in lateral view); I-L- 6 nearly straight, with dorsal and ventral margins equally diverging distally; I-L-5 dL 108, vL 88, dL/vL 1.23, HB 26, dL/HB 4.2, S-1 L 31, L/W 10.3, S-2 L 32, L/W 10.7, L ratio S-1/2 0.97; I-L-6 L 102, HB 20, ratio L/ HB 5.2; L I-L-5/6 1.06.

Discussion. In the shape of genital field (triangular genital field near posterior end of gonopore), I-L (terminal segments slightly modified, S-1 and S-2 short and stout, without interspace) and palps (P-2 with an acute-angled ventrodistal edge, ventral setae on P-4 flanked by tubercles), the female from Osogovska Planina agrees with A. pumilus (Szalay, 1946) , A. pygmaeus Motaş & Tanasachi, 1948 and A. ubinicus Tuzovskij, 1980 (Szalay 1946, Motaş & Tanasachi 1948, Tuzovskij 1980). These species differ in the presence of sclerotized dorsal and ventrocaudal muscle attachment plates and fusion of Vgl-1+2, A. pumilus and A. ubinicus furthermore in the excretory pore surrounded by a sclerotized ring, and the latter in the sword seta on P-4, being stouter, peg-like, and located more distally. Due to the clearcut differences, together with the fact that in pumilus -like species no particular sexual dimorphism is to be expected, the female from Macedonia most probably represent a species new to science. However, since male specimens are not available, the introduction of a new name will create more confusion than information given the present state of knowledge.

Habitat: Rhithrobiont.

Atractides (Atractides) sp. 2

( Figs. 8–9 View FIGURE 8 View FIGURE 9 )

Material examined. Greece: GR95 Lesbos, Potami river, upper west branch, 03.v.2000 Smit (0/2/0); GR 97

Lesbos, stream Priona S of Neochori, 04.v.2000 Smit (0/1/0); GR48 Makedonia, Vrondús, Sidirókastron, Krousovitis Potamos, 180 m a.s.l., QK 32 09, 02.vi.1991 Gerecke (0/1/0).

Morphology

Female: Dorsal integument striated; muscle attachment plates unsclerotized; glandularia small, maximum diameter 18–22. Coxal field ( Fig. 8A View FIGURE 8 ): caudal margin of Cx-I weakly curved, apodemes of Cx-II directed laterally; coxal field L 288–300; Cx-III W 316–370; Cx-I+II mL 102–109; lL Cx-I+II 203–206. Genital field ( Figs. 8A, C View FIGURE 8 ): pregenital sclerite curved, gonopore extending far over the anterior margins of the genital plates, Ac in a weakly curved line, L/W, 138–148/133–136; genital plate L 83–91; L Ac-1-3, 24–30, 24–26, 22–26. Excretory pore smooth; Vgl-1 not fused to Vgl-2.

Palp ( Fig. 8B View FIGURE 8 ): total L 273–286, dL: P-1, 31–32; P-2, 61–65; P-3, 64–68; P-4, 85–89; P-5, 30–32; %L: P- 1, 11.1–11.7; P-2, 22.3–22.9; P-3, 22.9–23.8; P-4, 31.1–31.8; P-5, 11.0–11.4; L ratio P-2/P-4, 0.72–0.73; P-2 ventral margin distally weakly convex; P-3 and P-4 ventral margins straight, P-4 sword seta strong, near to distoventral seta.

I-L ( Figs. 9A–B View FIGURE 9 ): I-L-5 longish, S-1 and S-2 rather homoiomorphic, setal interspace narrow; I-L-6 short, curved, basally thickened and distally continuously narrowed; I-L-5 dL 161–174, vL 118–124, dL/vL ratio 1.36–1.39, HB 52–58, dL/HB 3.0–3.1, S-1 L 77–80, L/W 10.3–10.5, S-2 L 70–78, L/W 6.7–8.1, distance S-1- 2, 10–12, L ratio S-1/2, 1.1; I-L-6 L 103–109, HB 24, L/HB ratio 4.3–4.5; L ratio I-L-5/6, 1.6.

Discussion. Due to the presence of small glandularia, very fine integument striation, I-L-5 with rather homoiomorphic S-1 and S-2 with narrow setal interspace and robust I-L-6 (L/HB <5.0), the described specimens are similar to A. vaginalis (Koenike, 1905) and A. adnatus ( Lundblad, 1956) , both crenobiontic species known from the Alps and Tatras (record of A. adnatus from Tatras with question mark, see Gerecke 2003). Both species (in parentheses, data taken from Gerecke 2003) differ in larger dimensions of Ac (> 40µm) in a triangular arrangement, S-1 and -2 nearly equal in size L ratio <1.1), and a narrower setal interspace (<10µm). Furthermore, A. adnatus (in parentheses) differs in a longer median suture of Cx-I (>120µm) and a relatively longer I-L-6 (L ratio I-L-5/6 <1.5). Probably, the three specimens from Makedonia and Lesbos represent a species new to science. A description and definitive diagnosis can be given only if the new taxon is known in both sexes.

Habitat. Rhithrobiont.

Atractides (Atractides) sp. 3

( Figs.10–11 View FIGURES 10 View FIGURE 11 )

Material examined. Greece, Lesbos: GR90 stream Mylopotamos, 06.v.2000 Smit (0/1/0); GR91 stream Evergotoulos, 02.v.2000 Smit (0/1/0); GR92 stream Krioneri, 11.v.2000 Smit (0/1/0).

Morphology

Female Idiosoma L/W 656–688/463–506. Dorsal integument striated; muscle attachments unsclerotized; glandularia enlarged by secondary sclerotization, maximum glandularia diameter 30–35. Coxal field ( Fig. 10A View FIGURES 10 ) with apodemes Cx-II in a 45° angle; coxal field L 295–314; Cx-III W 319–362; Cx-I+II mL 95–100; lL Cx-I+II 182–200. Genital field ( Figs. 10A–C View FIGURES 10 ) L/W, 139–158/133–150; genital plate L, 86; pregenital sclerite narrow, W 94–103; Ac in a weakly curved line, L Ac-1-3, 20–21, 18–21, 21–27. Excretory pore smooth; Vgl- 1 and Vgl-2 closely approached or (in older female) fused ( Fig. 11C View FIGURE 11 ).

Palp ( Figs. 11C–D View FIGURE 11 ) total L 275–296, dL P-1, 27–29; P-2, 61–65; P-3, 69–76; P-4, 86–93; P-5, 32–34; %L: P-1, 9.8–9.9; P-2, 21.5–22.2; P-3, 25.1–25.9; P-4, 31.1–31.7; P-5, 10.9–11.6; L ratio P-2/P-4, 0.7–0.72; palp slender, P-2 ventral margin weakly convex, nearly straight; P-3 ventrally straight, P-4 sword seta approached to distoventral seta; chelicera total L 192–197.

I-L ( Figs. 11A–B View FIGURE 11 ): I-L-5 considerably thickened at insertion S-1, ventral seta inserting very close to S-1; S-1/2 heteromorphic, thickened, setal interspace large; I-L-6 curved, very slender; I-L-5 dL 203–209, vL 115- 121, ratio dL/vL 1.74–1.88, HB 68–74, ratio dL/HB 2.8–3.0, S-1 L 112–123, L/W 8.6–10.2, S-2 L 76–83, L/ W 4.5–4.9, distance S-1-2, 46–50, L ratio S-1/2 1.47–1.56; I-L-6 L 150–167, HB 14–15, ratio L/HB 10.0– 11.6; L ratio I-L-5/6 1.25–1.35.

Discussion. In shape and measurements of idiosoma, palps and I-Leg, these specimens from Lesbos show a general conformity with A. inflatipes (see above, details for this species in Gerecke 2003 and Pesic 2001b), from which it differs in larger dimensions of glandularia (21µm in A. inflatipes ), a more elongated gonopore, and minor dimensions of Ac (maximum diameter> 30µm in A. inflatipes ). The study of more material is necessary before a decision can be made if we have to deal with an undescribed sister species of A. inflatipes or if our data contribute only to enlarge the known variability range of the latter.

Atractides (Tympanomegapus) lacustris (Lundblad, 1925)

( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 )

Syn. Atractides moniezi (Motaş, 1927) : syn. nov.

New record: Greece: GR90 Lesbos, stream Mylopotamos, 06.v.2000 Smit (1/0/0). Remarks: Atractides lacustris is closely related to A. ibericus (Lundblad, 1954) and A. moniezi (see Gerecke 2003). Atractides lacustris differs from A. ibericus in less extended dorsal and ventral shields (ventrocaudal sclerites not fused to a unique plate vs. fused to a unique plate in A. ibericus ), larger dimensions of idiosoma and appendages (L idiosoma> 550, coxal field> 300, I-L-5/6> 120/110 vs. L idiosoma <550, coxal field <300. I-L-5/6 <120/ 110 in A. ibericus ), cheliceral claw relatively short (basal segment/claw> 2.6 vs. <2.6 in A. ibericus ), I-L-5 more slender (dL/HB> 3.8 vs. <3.8 in A. ibericus ), and I-L-6 relatively short (ratio I- L-5/ 6>1.15 vs. <1.15 in A. ibericus ). The male specimen from Lesbos has dimensions similar to A. lacustris or intermediate between A. lacustris and A. ibericus (e.g., L idiosoma 556, coxal field L 300, chelicera basal segment/claw 2.86, I-L-5/6 126/102, S-1/2 42/49, I-L-5 dL/HB 4.86, I-L-6 dL/HB 4.6, L I-L-5/6 1.23). According to Gerecke (2003) sclerotization of muscle attachment plates is highly variable in males of A. lacustris . In the holotype of A. scutatus (syn. to A. lacustris ), an extended shield covering most of the dorsum, including prefr, postoc, D-1-4, and Dgl-3-5 is present; all coxae are fused to form a unique coxal shield, and the border of secondary sclerite at the posterior margin of Cx-IV includes also Vgl-3+4. The specimen from Lesbos has an extended ventral shield including genital field and all ventralia, but excluding Vgl-1+2 and the excretory pore ( Fig. 12A View FIGURE 12 ). The holotype of A. ibericus differs mostly in the fusion of Vgl-1+2 to the ventral shield. Future studies should clear if this is a stable character.

Atractides moniezi , a species known only from females, according to Gerecke (2003) should differ from A. lacustris in the presence of a pair of long swimming setae each on III/IV-L-5, along with slightly minor palp measurements and more slender P-4 and I-L-5. As swimming hairs are easily lost or overlooked, and the specimen from Lesbos has a pair of swimming hairs at distal margins of III/IV-L-5 ( Fig. 12C View FIGURE 12 ), we consider A. moniezi a junior synonym of A. lacustris . New for the fauna of Greece.
