Rüppell (1837) described Belone platura from the Red Sea. Later Parin (1967) placed the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Gulf populations in the subspecies Platybelobe argalus platura ; therefore it is unnecessary to mention the species P. argalus .
