Canthidium (Canthidium) puncticolle Harold, 1867 View in CoL
Canthidium puncticolle Harold, 1867a: 39 View in CoL [here transferred to the subgenus Canthidium View in CoL ]. Type locality: Brazil (“ Brasilien; Mexiko ”; see comment below). Type material: Location of syntypes unknown [ Harold (1867a) cited that the C. puncticolle View in CoL specimens he had on hand were sent him by a teacher named Schmidt from Hamburg, and by the German entomologist Johann Georg Haag-Rutenberg (“Von Herrn Lehrer Schmidt aus Hamburg erhalten, auch von Dr. Haag mitgetheilt”). Regarding Schmidt’s specimens, if they were later incorporated to the ZMUH collection, they were probably destroyed in 1943 during the Allied bombing of Hamburg, when much of the city was damaged, including the Coleoptera View in CoL collection at ZMUH ( Klapperich 1948; Weidner 1976). This fact was cited by Solís & Kohlmann (2004) to support their hypothesis that the entire type series was lost, but this is not necessarily the case: Haag’s specimens were not in Hamburg and, therefore, may still survive in some other European museum. According to Horn & Kahle (1935), Haag’s collection was divided into smaller parts and sold to different beetle collectors in 1878 and 1880. Later, these personal collections were bought by IRSN, SDEI, and ZSMC. Therefore, those institutions are the most likely whereabouts of the surviving syntypes of C. puncticolle View in CoL ]. Distribution: Brazil (Solís & Kohlmann 2004) [not present in Mexico as stated by Harold (1867a), Martínez & Halffter (1986a), and others].
