Meunier (1884: 19) described this species for the “cochenille sylvestre”, a name used by Thierry de Menonville (1787: 347). Cockerell (1894: 311) wrongly credited the name to Thiéry de Ménonville who used the vernacular name only. Lindinger (1935: 133) regarded the name as a junior synonym of Dactylopius coccus Costa . Current status: we here synonymise the name with Dactylopius tomentosus (Lamarck) syn. n. (Family Dactylopiidae ).
