This name is valid and preceded Coccus mespili Gmelin 1790 which is given with the same reference and description. Current status: Fernald (1903: 130) synonymised C. mespili Gmelin with C. carpini L. and so C. mespili Goeze is also regarded here as a junior synonym of C. carpini L. (= Pulvinaria vitis (L.)) syn. n.
