Macrurohelea View in CoL :

- Apex of female abdomen abruptly bent anteroventrally, with the ninth and tenth segments markedly elongate. This feature, unique in the Culicomorpha, was noted by Borkent (1995: character 40). Although in some it appears that both segments 9 and 10 are bent forward, in others segment 9 is strongly developed but directed posteriorly and it is only segment 10 which is directed anteriorly when at rest.An undescribed species from Chile (Región IX Araucanía, Prov. Cautín, SE of Curacautin, Parque Nacional Conguillío, sector Playa Curacautín, 38°38’56.5”S 71°39’24.3”W, 1195 m, 9–21-I-2013, M. Pollet & A. De Braekeleer; MNHNCL) and perhaps an earlier lineage within the genus, has only segment 10 and cerci directed ventrally at a right angle. Further to this, all other Ceratopogonidae (see Discussion below) have tergite 10 divided medially. Macrurohelea are the only members of the family in which tergite 10 is complete.
