- The lateral arm of the prosternal apophysis with a dorsomedial protrusion near the base of the prosternal apophysis (absent in all others).
- Female tarsomeres 5 with stout ventral spines having sharp bent tips. Also often given in generic keys, this feature is not a confident autapomorphy of the genus as it is absent in some species (e.g. P. vacunae (de Meillon) , P. sabroskyi ). Furthermore, apically bent spines are also present in Amerohelea , some Bezzia , and some Palpomyia . When present, these are in two rows in Phaenobezzia while generally in those other taxa having them, they are generally in a single row at least on the hind tarsomere 5.
