Orchestina fractipes View in CoL new species

Figures 266–298, 607

TYPE: Holotype Male : Democratic Republic of the Congo, Monzé (Engengele), 20.03333°, 22.73333°, old secondary forest, canopy, June 30, 2009, De Bakker D. ( MRAC 228666 PBI _OON 33884).

ETYMOLOGY: The species name is derived from the combination of ‘fractus’ (broken) and ‘pes’ (leg) referring to the particular shape of the tibia I in the male.

DIAGNOSIS: The male of O. fractipes is recognized by the curved and swollen tibia I ( Figs. 273, 274), the clumped eyes and the asymmetric arrangement of modified setae on the labium ( Fig. 284). The female is recognized by the simple straight AUS followed by two tranverse darker lines in the genital area (Ri3 and Ri1 & Ri 2 in Burger et al. 2010) ( Fig. 277).

MALE (PBI_OON_0033884). Total length 1.02. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace ( Figs. 266, 269, 272) yellow-brown, broadly oval in dorsal view (CW/CL ≈ 0.82), pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to between 0.5 and 0.75 times its maximum width. Clypeus very high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by more than two times their diameter, vertical in lateral view. Eyes ALE-PME touching, PME oval; PLE- PME touching. Sternum ( Figs. 271, 279) as long as wide, yellow-brown, anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, with tiny dark sepia spots forming thin dark stripes radiating from anterior half of sternum; setae abundant, evenly scattered. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae ( Fig. 280) straight; retromargin without teeth; setae sparse; paturon laminate groove absent. Labium ( Figs. 271, 279, 283, 284) triangular, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal region with group of five needle like setae, with one pair of large symmetric flattened setae in the centre, followed by one pair of large asymmetric flattened setae, in a slightly oblique longitudinal position. Endites ( Figs. 280–282) serrula present in single row, anteromedian tip unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization, inner margin with submarginal row of short pectinate setae, adjacent to row of strong needle-like setae. ABDOMEN: ( Figs. 266, 269) ovoid; dorsum soft portions yellow-brown, with dark posterior end. Book lung covers small, elliptical. Spinnerets: ALS with four spigots, PMS with one spigot, PLS with two spigots. LEGS: yellow; LEGS: patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace (TL/CL ≈ 1.00), tibia I ( Figs. 272–274, 259) slightly sinuous in lateral view, halfway twisted outward in dorsal view; with multiple pores ( Fig. 293) on dorsal and prolateral face in proximal half; metatarsi apical part with group of small modified setae ( Figs. 291, 292) on prolateral side of leg I, II and III. Tarsal organ ( Figs. 290, 294–296) pear shaped; palpal tarsal organ ( Fig. 285) elongate piriform, transverse to axis of segment, with three sensilla, with short conical seta emerging from tubercle near proximal margin. GENITALIA: Palp ( Figs. 275, 276, 285–288) proximal segments yellow; patella without prolateral row of ridges, attached to tibia sub-basally; tibia reniform, more than two times as wide as femur; cymbium pale orange, without distal patch of setae, semi-spherical in dorsal view; bulb yellow, stout, piriform; embolus dark, long, needle-like, at almost right angle with long axis of bulbus.

FEMALE (PBI_OON_0033886). As in male except as noted. Total length 1.30. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace ( Figs. 267, 270) broadly oval in dorsal view (CW/CL ≈ 0.77). Clypeus sloping forward in lateral view. PLE- PME almost touching. Sternum ( Fig. 268) pale orange, anterior margin unmodified. ABDOMEN: without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly. Pedicel tube short. Spinnerets: ALS with five spigots, PMS with two spigots, PLS with three spigots. GENITALIA ( Figs. 277, 278): Ventral view: large, sclerotized tubular structure visible through cuticle (AUS). Dorsal view: AUS tubular, elongated oval, loaf shaped, with large, procurved, posterior apodemes (Ex); Pr and ARe not visible in our preparations; posterior receptaculum absent.
