Mangelia tenuicosta ( Brugnone 1862) View in CoL
( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 )
Pleurotoma attenuatum var. tenuicosta Brugnone 1862: 25 View in CoL , fig. 17.
Materials: 03.02.2009, Mersin Bay, Levantine Sea , mud, 72 m, 2 spm ( ESFM-GAS/2009-53 ) .
Remarks: The shell shape of the species is very similar to Mangelia attenuata , from which it differs by its narrower and flexuous axial ribs, thinner conical teleoconch shape and longer siphonal canal. Some references have noted the lack of incised striae in M. tenuicosta as a distinguishing feature. However, many of the individuals of M. attenuata investigated in the present study did not have incised striae on the teleoconch whorls or the striae were present on earlier whorls only. Therefore, the feature does not seem to be reliable for differentiating these species.
Distribution: Eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea ( GBIF 2020). Turkish coasts: Levantine Sea ( Aslan & Ovalis 2017).
