Diagnosis: Micronecta gracilis is distinguished by the elongate body form ( Figs. 46c–e View FIGURE 46 ), expanded palar claw ( Figs. 47d View FIGURE 47 , 48a View FIGURE 48 ), and distinct male parameres ( Figs. 48b–g View FIGURE 48 ). Females are distinguished by general facies and combination of the prothoracic lobe ( Fig. 47a View FIGURE 47 ) and metaxyphus ( Fig. 47b View FIGURE 47 ).

Size: ( Table 15). Brachypterous form: 2.75. Macropterous form: 2.97–3.82.

Derivation of specific epithet: From the Latin gracil, meaning slender, probably in reference to the elongate, narrow body form of this species.

Notes on type material: Hale’s type series is deposited in [ SAMA]. The series is mounted on a card with 1 ♂ and 2 ♀♀ ( Figs. 46a–c View FIGURE 46 ). The locality label reads: “Quorn, S. Australia, A. H. Elston. ” A smaller label is below and reads “ TYPE.” Hale’s handwritten label reads: “ Micronecta gracilis Hale , South Australia.” Type number I.15189 is handwritten in the top right corner of the label and the word “ TYPE ” is handwritten on the right side of the label ( Fig. 46b View FIGURE 46 ). All type material examined.

Description: Based on macropterous form. One brachypterous male examined and noted below as [brachypterous]. Measurements. Length: male 3.10–3.56 [2.75]; female 2.97–3.82; Width: male 1.40–1.54 [1.33]; female 1.32–1.66; Width of head: male 1.09–1.23 [1.09]; female 1.16–1.34; Synthlipsis: male 0.43–0.51 [0.44]; female 0.43–0.61; Width of eye: male 0.36–0.39 [0.37]; female 0.31–0.48; Width of pronotum: male 1.05–1.25 [1.04]; female 1.06–1.39; Length of pronotum: male 0.38–0.44 [0.43]; female 0.30–0.52.

Color: Ground color light brown ( Figs. 46c–e View FIGURE 46 ). Head light brown, eyes silvery-black. Vertex, frons, clypeus, and genae all unicolorous. Genae with pitting appearing as small, evenly distributed dots. Labium black. Antennae light brown, with outer margins narrowly infuscated. Pronotum brown to dark brown with olive tinge, unicolorous with scale-like pitting; narrow pale apical band present along entire width. Scutellum light brown, darker basally. Clavi each with broad, pale diagonal area well-developed, medial and apical portions same ground color as rest of hemelytra. Inner portion of clavus and area along claval suture with darker, pronounced longitudinal lines. Corium light brown, with two or three evenly spaced dark, longitudinal irregular lines, prominent in medial to apical portions. Prenodal embolar area long, infuscated in apical half, post-nodal embolar are short, same color as corial ground color. Left membrane of both sexes hyaline. Venter of both sexes light brown with darker areas laterally, natatorial setae of metatarsus darkened.

Structural characteristics: Ratio of body length/width: males 2.22; females 2.28. Head width nearly equal to pronotal width, synthlipsis 1.3 times as wide as posterior width of eye. Ocular index: males 1.34; females 1.39. General facies of head (vertex, frons, and labium) proportionate. Third antennal segment densely pilose, long, clubshaped, base tapered with upper margin nearly straight, lower margin rounded, apex broadly rounded, segments one and two very short. Pronotum of macropterous forms robust, convex, widest at middle with lateral margins weakly tapered and squared, about 2.5 times as wide as long (W/L: males 1.09/0.42; females 1.25/0.45). Pronotum of same proportions in the examined brachypterous male specimen (W/L: 1.06/0.44). Prothoracic lobe short, broad, with lower margin straight and posterior lobe broadly rounded ( Fig. 47a View FIGURE 47 ).

Hemelytral microsculpturing consisting of dense, fine transverse meshes distributed over entire surface. Short setae uniformly distributed over entire hemelytral surface. In macropterous forms, metathoracic wings well-developed reaching to apex of hemelytra. Wings reduced in the single examined brachypterous specimen, reaching only to abdominal segment VI. Lateral spines on abdominal segments IV–VIII: IV: one stout, short spine, two thin, long setae; V: two stout, short setae, one long, stout seta, one long, thin seta; VI: two stout, short setae, one long, stout seta; VII: two short, stout spines, one long, stout spine one long, thin seta; VIII: seven stout, short spines, two long, stout spines, two long, thin setae. Metaxyphus of both sexes broad, triangular, with apex broadly rounded ( Fig. 47b View FIGURE 47 ).

Male foreleg ( Fig. 47c View FIGURE 47 ): femur with two short, stout spines in basal third near ventral surface and numerous setae at base. Tibia with one short spine in apico-ventral portion, one short seta in dorso-medial portion, and one long spine placed apico-dorsally. Pala with four setae and one spine-like seta dorsally; palmar area with 9–15 illproduced setae in upper row and 17–18 setae in lower row, lower row setae more pronounced than those of dorsal row. Apex of pala with a long thickened seta. Palar claw ( Figs. 47d View FIGURE 47 , 48a View FIGURE 48 ) tapered proximally, exceptionally broad, and rounded apically. Female foreleg with same general setal arrangement as male. Mesotarsal claws equaling nearly one-half the length of the mesotarsus.

Lateral lobes of abdominal tergum IV comparatively broad, of even length, and rounded apically. Right lobe with nine long setae, left lobe with eight long evenly spaced, apically placed setae. Prestrigilar flap of tergal segment V as in Figure 47e View FIGURE 47 . Strigil well-developed, elongated, narrow with few combs. Median lobe of sternite VII broad basally ( Fig. 47f View FIGURE 47 ), long, with numerous short setae restricted sub-basally, apex triangular, narrowly rounded. Free lobe of tergite VIII ( Fig. 47g View FIGURE 47 ) broad, nearly quadrate in outline, outer angle narrowly rounded and inner angle comparatively short. Setae of varying lengths placed over entire apical portion and numbering about 29. Pars stridens processus cleaner ridges of tergite VIII not examined. Male left paramere ( Figs. 48b–f View FIGURE 48 ) long, narrow and parallel-sided, apex curved inward and terminating into a sharp, recurved hook, scales present in interior portion of apical hook. Base broad, upper portion reaching nearly to middle of paramere shaft, lower portion of base broadly rounded ( Figs. 48b–d View FIGURE 48 ). Right paramere ( Figs. 48b–d, f View FIGURE 48 ) long, convexly curved, and nearly parallel-sided, tip gradually tapering to bluntly rounded point ( Fig. 48f View FIGURE 48 ). Base comparatively short, widened, with lower portion rounded. Pars stridens processus consisting of about 19 plectral ribs confined to lower portion ( Fig. 48g View FIGURE 48 ). Aedeagus broad, as in Figures 48b–d View FIGURE 48 .

Distribution and Habitat: AUSTRALIA: [widespread]: recorded from all Australian states; not recorded here from Australian Capital Territory. Primarily a lotic species, as seen from AMSA survey collections. Also recorded from lights. Often collected in association with M. robusta .

Discussion: Little overall variation is seen in this widespread species. General variation is seen in the ground color (light vs. darker) of the species, however, all specimens examined exhibited well-developed hemelytral markings. The long, slender left paramere and characteristic right paramere are unique among Australian Micronecta . The left paramere is diagnostic, with well-developed scales in the hooked apical portion.
