Type Locality: "Habitat in Russiae aquosis." .
Vernacular Names: Desman.
Synonyms: Desmana moschatus Linnaeus 1958 ; Desmana moscovitica (Geoffroy 1811) .
Distribution: Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan; Don, Volga, and Ural Rivers and their tributaries; introduced into Tachan and Tartas Rivers (Ob basin) and Dnepr River. Almost extinct in Belarus.
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Borodin (1963), Barabash-Nikiforov (1968, 1975), Khakhin and Ivanov (1990), and Queiroz et al. (1996) reviewed the morphology, distribution and ecology of the species. Dental formula discussed by Kawada et al. (2002 c).
