scientific name

Pyralis obscurana
status

obscurana Fabricius, 1798

Pyralis obscurana Fabricius, 1798: 476 .

Type locality. France (“Habitat in Gallia Dom. Bosc”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Eucosma aspidiscana (Hübner, 1817) ( Olethreutinae , Eucosmini ).

Remarks. Pyralis obscurana is a doubtful senior synonym of Tortrix aspidiscana as proposed by Werneburg (1864: 560). Apart from this older citation, there is no evidence of the true identity of P. obscurana . Moreover, E. aspidiscana is a well established name (Brown 2005) for a widespread species whose replacement would result in considerable confusion. Pyralis obscurana has been out of use (nomen oblitum), and therefore we herewith propose to conserve T. aspidiscana (nomen protectum) and suppress P. obscurana according to the provisions of Article 23.9 (ICZN 1999). Appendix 2 lists 31 references by more than ten different authors that have used aspidiscana in the last 50 years.
