Type species: Gryllacris ruficeps Serville, 1831

Diagnosis. The genus is characterized by the rather wide and short appearance of head and pronotum combined with following coloration of hind wings: cross-veins of light color, green or light brown bordered by light, semitransparent bands, while the middle of the cells is dark or blackish brown. Ninth abdominal tergite male about helmet-shaped, finely furrowed in midline, in middle of apex impressed and provided with a pair of hooks that are greatly variable in length or with projections of other shape. Female ovipositor usually moderately curved; the seventh sternite preceding the subgenital plate often with a projection or extension covering the base of the subgenital plate. The color pattern of the hind wings with dark cell centers and light bands along the cross veins agrees with that of Ocellarnaca , while in other genera with colored hind wings dark bands run along the cross veins while the cell centers are of light color.
