Xanthogryllacris punctipennis punctipennis ( Walker, 1869) View in CoL
Holotype (male, not seen): Indonesia: Maluka , Pulau Batjan—Mr. Saunders' collection.
Discussion. It seems that nobody studied the holotype of that species after Walkers' description in 1869. A reexamination of the holotype will be necessary to decide on the status of the several subspecies and species previously described. The holotype came from a private collection and was not found in NHM London but might be in UMO Oxford. A recent closer re-examination of the specimens found under the name X. punctipennis in German collections during the DORSA project ( Ingrisch et al. 2004) revealed that they can be sorted into four different taxa, none of it is probably identical with Walkers' type. Brunner's (1888) X. aurantiaca must also be removed from synonymy with X. punctipennis , but a lectotype has to be selected as Brunner's type series contains more than one species (see below). I currently keep these taxa as subspecies of X. punctipennis . When the type of the latter will be re-examined some of them may receive full species status. See also discussion in Hugel (2009).
