Taxonomic history. Considered a subspecies of Opsiphanes sallei , until Bristow (1991), based on the wing pattern, raised it to species rank. This decision was followed by Casagrande (2004). Blandin et al. (2015) noted that Opsiphanes mutatus is exclusively Andean.
Type material. Opsiphanes sallei mutatus Stichel, 1902 was described based on four males, from [Hacienda] S[an]ta Inéz [=Inés], [Tungurahua], Ecuador, eastern Andes, 1,250 m, collected between XI–XII by R. Haensch. Bristow (1991) designated a male as the lectotype, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Typus/ Type/ LECTOTYPE / Ecuador Santa Inez e. c. H. Stichel/ O. sallei mutatus Stich. Type/ Rothschild Bequest B. M. 1939-1./. Stichel (1904) referred to figure 2 of the original description of Opsiphanes mutatus as “fig. typ.” Bristow (1991) selected as a lectotype a different specimen from the one illustrated by Stichel (1902, 1909) ( Fig. 94 View FIGURE 94 ). Thus, “fig. typ.” of Stichel (1904) should be interpreted as the “typical” phenotype.
Diagnosis. Opsiphanes mutatus is phenotypically similar to Opsiphanes farrago stat. nov., differing in having the DFW with the oblique band usually twice the width of the DHW submarginal band, and the DHW with the submarginal band usually evident only up to M 3 ( Fig. 92a View FIGURE 92 ). Despite the small number of specimens of Opsiphanes mutatus analyzed (n=3), these characters were constant. Female: Unknown.
Male genitalia. Not examined. Female genitalia. Not examined. Variation. FW, length: male: 45–46 mm (n=2). Natural history. Unknown. Geographic distribution. Ecuador (“Oriente”, [Tungurahua]); Peru ( Río Huallaga ) ( Fig. 93 View FIGURE 93 ). Temporal distribution. Unknown. Etymology. Unknown. Specimens examined.
