Taxonomic history. When describing Opsiphanes merianae notanda Stichel, 1904 stat. nov., Stichel proposed the name with the ending “a” (“ notanda ”), but in the same year and later he referred to the taxon with the ending “us” (“ notandus ”). Although Stichel (1904) based the description only on males, the correct spelling is Opsiphanes merianae notanda Stichel, 1904 stat. nov. Chacón et al. (2012) referred to the status of subspecies when mentioning “ O. notanda ” as a species, without an explanation.
Type material. Opsiphanes cassina notanda Stichel, 1904 was described based on three males from Pozuzo, [Pasco], Peru, collected by W. Hoffmanns and deposited in the Stichel collection. Bristow (1991) designated a male as the lectotype, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Typus/ Type/ LECTOTYPE / Süd-Peru Pozuzo e. c. H. Stichel/ O. c. notandus [sic] Stich./ Rothschild Bequest B.M. 1939-1./.
Opsiphanes cassina milesi Bristow, 1991 was described based on the holotype female, illustrated by D’Abrera (1987) and Bristow (1991), deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Type/ Para. (A. M. Moss.)/ Ops. cassina milesi Bristow/ Rothschild Bequest B.M. 1939-1./.
Diagnosis. Opsiphanes merianae notanda stat. nov. differs from Opsiphanes merianae merianae stat. rest. in the usually straight oblique band of the DFW and in the DHW with the submarginal band usually half the width of the DFW oblique band ( Figs 195–198 View FIGURE 195 View FIGURE 196 View FIGURE 197 View FIGURE 198 ).
Variation. FW, length: male: 40–45 mm (n=9), female: 43–47 mm (n=3). DHW, width and length of submarginal band ( Figs 195–198 View FIGURE 195 View FIGURE 196 View FIGURE 197 View FIGURE 198 ).
Comments. After examination of the type material ( Figs 203–205 View FIGURE 203 View FIGURE 204 View FIGURE 205 ) and the variations in the widths of bands on the DFW and DHW of males and females in a series of specimens from different locations, no characters were identified to justify maintaining Opsiphanes cassina milesi syn. nov. as a subspecies.
