Type Locality: Brazil, Bahia, Rio Belmonte. Designated by Moojen (1952) as Rio Grande de Belmonte, Rio Pardo, Rio San Francisco; but see Cabrera (1961:580).
Vernacular Names: Rock Cavy.
Synonyms: Kerodon moco Lesson 1827 ; Kerodon sciurens Geoffroy St. Hilaire 1826 .
Distribution: E Brazil.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Karyotype has 2n=52 and FN=92 ( Maia, 1984).
