2 Tegmina shorter than abdomen............... 3

± Subgenital plate with two distal foveolae (®gure 43)....... schereri
4 Pronotum 5±7 mm, depressed in whole length, rounded lateral edges distinct in second half of prozona and in metazona............... 5 ± Pronotum 8±9 mm, slightly convex in prozona, rounded lateral edges distinct only in metazona................... taurica
5 Ovipositor short, 12±14.1 mm............. armeniaca ± Ovipositor long, 17±18 mm .............. uvarovi Remarks. The subgenus Montana is de®ned by its ovipositor type as mentioned by Zeuner (1941) and Ramme (1951). However, its seems heterogenous when length of tegmina, female subgenital plate, male cerci and coloration are considered.
KarabagÏ (1950) described P. ankarensis in the subgenus Montana . However, it diOEers from other species of the subgenus by ovipositor type (basely light and dark in the rest, thick and more strongly upcurved) and wings shorter than pronotum. Somewhat similar to the Squamiana by ovipositor type, it diOEers, however, by unmodi®ed VI and VII sternite of female and apically wide tegmina. At the moment, it cannot be included in any known subgenera. Though we believe that it does not belong to Montana , it tentatively remained within Montana .
Of the six species considered in this study, P. elegans diOEers from all others by being macropterus, possessing an apically divided female subgenital plate and blackish coloration. The remaining ®ve species, P. taurica , P. uvarovi , P. armeniaca , P. schereri and to some extent P. ankarensis can be considered to be closely related possessing a female subgenital plate without incision. P. uvarovi and P. armeniaca can only be distinguished by the characters given in the key. Preapical tooth of cerci and narrow processes of male anal tergite are the main similarities of P. ankarensis and P. schereri . However, P. ankarensis is quite diOEerent from the others by its measurements.

Song description. The calling song consisted of echemes each containing 3±15 syllable groups (®gure 46). Each syllable group contained typically three syllables 14
at of by (two syllables quite common at beginning and end of an echeme). The syllable groups were produced at a rate of 10.5 Hz, the syllables at 46.5 Hz (®rst to second syllable) to 40 Hz (second to third syllable) (at>26ssC).
The frequency spectrum peaked at 29 kHz (up to 40 kHz registered).
A calling song containing groups of three syllables has also been observed in Platycleis (Montana) macedonica Berland and Chopard, 1922 ( Heller, 1988) , 14
