26. Philoliche Wiedemann, 1821b: 4 View in CoL View at ENA [ 1821c: 54; 1828: 95].
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Tabanus rostratus Linnaeus, 1758 ; Pangonia angulata Fabricius, 1805 ; Pangonia melanopyga Wiedemann, 1819 ; Pangonia lateralis Fabricius, 1805 ; Pangonia spiloptera Wiedemann, 1821 ; Pangonia analis Fabricius, 1805 .
TYPE SPECIES: Tabanus rostratus Linnaeus, 1758 , by subsequent designation ( Coquillett, 1910: 588) .
CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [ teste Sabrosky (1999: 242) ].
FAMILY: TABANIDAE .
REMARKS: Philoliche Wiedemann, 1821 was originally proposed within [= effectively as a subgenus of] Pangonia Latreille, 1802 . Chainey & Oldroyd (1980: 286), Daniels (1989: 281) and Sabrosky (1999: 242) listed Wiedemann (1828: 95) as the first publication to make the name Philoliche available. However, Wiedemann (1821b: 4) gave characters for it and included the six species listed above. Lucas (1838: 21) and Desmarest (1859: 233) designated Tabanus fuscipennis Wiedemann, 1828 as the type species (the last of these works was followed by Sabrosky, 1999) but, although Tabanus fuscipennis Wiedemann, 1828 was originally included in the Wiedemann (1828) work, it was not an originally included species in Wiedemann (1821b), thus designations of it are invalid. The earliest designation based on originally included species is Tabanus rostratus Linnaeus, 1758 by Coquillett (1910: 588).
