Genus Tympanoterpes Stål, 1861 View in CoL
Tympanoterpes Stål 1861: 614 View in CoL .
Type species. C[icada] serricosta Germar 1834: 62 View in CoL . ( Brazil)
REMARKS. The general nature and few characters used in the original description has meant that only three of the eight species Stål (1861) included in the genus still remain classified in Tympanoterpes with previously classified species of the genus now found in eight genera from three tribes ( Sanborn 2013). Distant (1906a) distinguished the genus in his key by a moderately elevated, not angularly produced transverse central plate of metasternum, head including the eyes about equal as wide as base of mesonotum, eyes scarcely project beyond anterior angle of pronotum, vertex of head often only very slightly longer than front at area of ocelli, slightly prominent but not lobately produced pronotal posterior angles, fore wings radial crossvein strongly oblique. The genus is in need of revision.
DISTRIBUTION. Species of the genus have been reported from Argentina, Brazil, Guyana, Uruguay, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013; Sanborn & Heath 2014) with a recent range extension to include Bolivia and Peru ( Sanborn 2019b).
