Murina kontumensis appears to be closely related to M. hkakaboraziensis and possibly Harpiocephalus harpia based on limited genetic data. Monotypic.
Distribution. Known only from type locality in SC Vietnam. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 40 mm, tail 38- 5 mm, ear 18- 7 mm, hindfoot 7- 6 mm, forearm 32- 3 mm; weight 5 g (type specimen). Fur long and silky. Dorsal pelage is dark grayish brown (hairs with dark brown bases, light brown middles, and darker brownish gray tips), with shiny golden-tipped guard hairs mixed throughout that are most dense on head and forehead; venter is lighter and grayer brown (hairs gray on basal one-third and light brown to tips). Head has distinct dark brown facemask around eyes, with contrasting whitish collar around neck. Dorsal pelage extends sparsely onto wings, uropatagium, thumbs, and feet. Face is sparsely haired except for long protuberant naked nostrils. Ears are short, broad, and rounded, with smoothly convex anterior margins, slight notch on posterior margins, and broadly rounded tips; tragus is long and narrow and tapers toward pointed tip. Wing attaches near base of claw on first toe. Skull hasslightly shortened, domed rostrum and domed braincase; sagittal and lambdoidal crests are absent; I? is partially anterior to I’; C' has smaller basal area but greater height than P* P? is one-half to slightly less than the height and basal area of P*; M' and M? have well-developed mesostyles; and talonids of M, and M, are larger than their respective trigonids. Chromosomal complement has 2n = 44 and FN = 50.
Habitat. Undisturbed primary moist evergreen forest with abundant bananas and bamboo at an elevation of 1780 m (type locality).

Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List. The Kon Tum Rubenosed Bat is currently only known from a single specimen, and virtually nothing is known aboutits ecology or conservation threats.
