GENUS ANCHOPHTHALMUS GERSTAECKER, 1854 ,

= Oxythorax Fåhraeus, 1870 syn. by Gebien (1938). Type species: Oxythorax clathratus Fåhraeus, 1870 ; by monotypy.

= Oncotiphallops Koch, 1956 syn. by Iwan (2002a). Type species: Oncotiphallops barbosai Koch, 1956 ; by monotypy.

Type species: Anchophthalmus silphoides Gerstaecker, 1854 ; by original designation.

Diagnostic characters: Anchophthalmus, Ectateus , Nesopatrum , and Phallocentrion form a clade support- ed by the following synapomorphies: circular depressions on the lateral sides of the clypeus and genae (character 6:1), a strongly corrugated lateral surface of the pronotal disc (except Nesopatrum ; character 9:1), pronotal margins strongly erected upwards (except Kochogaster ; character 15:1), posterior pronotal angles strongly protruding towards the elytra (except Nesopatrum ; character 16:1), elytral epipleuron flat over the whole surface (character 31:1), and an dented scutellum (except Phallocentrion ; character 34:1). Within the aforementioned group, Anchophthalmus , owing to the epipleuron structure of the elytra (character 17:0, 30:1), most closely resembles Nesopatrum and Phallocentrion .

Anchophthalmus is distinguished from all other Afrotropical platynotoid Platynotina by having wide apical maxillary palpi (character 4:1), deep depressions on the frons (character 7:1), and two additional sacs in the bursa copulatrix (character 40:1).
