Nyctimenius palawanicus (Aurivillius, 1922) View in CoL stat. n.
( Figs 19–22 View FIGURES 19 – 22 )
Nyctimene palavanica Aurivillius, 1922a: 162 (type locality: “Nord-Palawan”), 1922b: 425 (key), 1923: 609. Nyctimenius ochraceovittata View in CoL ssp. palawanica Breuning 1970: 80 View in CoL .
Comments. Breuning (1970) regarded N. palawanicus as a subspecies of N. ochraceovittatus based on the character: each abdominal segment covered with a long yellow spot at each side. However, in Aurivillius’ (1922b) study the abdomen of N. palawanicus was described as covered with well-defined white spots laterally. Besides, N. palawanica is distinctly different from N. ochraceovittatus in the following characters: gena covered with a grayish white vitta laterally almost extending to the abdominal apex, eyes with a white pubescence at sides, vertex with a white narrow longitudinal vitta, and the pronotum with three white longitudinal vittae ( Aurivillius, 1922a). Therefore, Nyctimenius palawanicus should not be regarded as a subspecies of Nyctimenius ochraceovittatus .
According to Dr. Hans Huijbregts (NBCH) and Dr. Pasquale Ciliberti (NBCH) there are 6 specimens with the same label data but only one of the series has the handwritten type label (Personal communication). We hereby designate the type which has the handwritten type label as the lectotype, and designate the others as paralectotypes following the recommendations of Art. 74.7 (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999). It is evident that “ palawanica ” was written on the label, but Aurivillius (1922a) gave the name “ palavanica ” when describing this species. We surmise Aurivillius might make a mistake of spelling in his paper. Breuning (1970) had corrected the mistake in his revision of Nyctimenius .
Specimens examined. Nyctimenius palawanicus : Lectotype designated here: gender unknown (NBCH), palawanica . Aur. Typus. Palawan (handwriting on a white rectangular label with black borders in black ink)/ Museum Leiden, Ex Coll. G. van Roon (printed on a white rectangular label in black ink)/N. Palawan Binaluan, Nov.-Dez.1913, leg. G. Roeltcher (printed on a white rectangular label with black border in black ink)/ LECTOTYPE, Nyctimenius palawanicus (Aurivillius, 1922) , des. Guiqiang Huang 2014 (printed on a white rectangular label with black border in black ink). Paralectotypes labeled: 5 gender unknown (NBCH), same data as lectotype.
