Stenocerus paraguayensis Jordan, 1895: 167 View in CoL ; Jordan, 1906: 320; Wolfrum, 1929: 34 (cat.); Valentine, 1980: 290 (rev.); Rheinheimer, 2004: 38 (cat.); syn. nov.
Type locality Paraguay.
Jordan (1895: 167) described Stenocerus paraguayensis based on the female holotype ( Figs. 57–59 View FIGURES 57–59 ) from Paraguay and wrote: “ St. fulvipedi Germ. Colore simillimus. Multo minor; prothorace cavina laterali leviter sinuata antice rotundato-prominente; elytris dorso ad suturam multo profundius impressis, basi post scutellum ante depressionem fortius transverse elevatis; processu intracoxali mesosterni latissimo, altitudine fere duplo latiore, perpendiculari, margine supero rotundato incrassato ”. He stressed some comparative differences with S. fulvitarsis , based on the wide and thickening of the apical margin at the mesosternal process, but we found this broad width at the apical margin occurring clearly in seven species of Stenocerus ( S. frontalis , S. nigrotessellatus , S. longulus , S. fulvitarsis and the two new species described herein, S. christus and S. fratris ).
Valentine (1980) already suspected that S. paraguayensis was an abnormal specimen of S. fulvitarsis or it represented a geographical variation of that species, because he noticed that it resembled S. fulvitarsis in most features, except for the rostrum unicarinate and prosternal process not exceeding the coxal margin posteriorly. He also mentioned that there are another two specimens with the same labels together with the holotype, but with the rostrum tricarinate and prosternal process exceeding the coxal margin posteriorly.
The examination of the type material of S. paraguayensis deposited at the BMNH and also the ample series of material of S. fulvitarsis from different collections allowed for establishment of the present synonymy. The type material of S. fulvitarsis was not found in MNHN, Paris.
The characters presented by Jordan (1895, 1906) and Valentine (1980) in the characterization of S. paraguayensis can be found in S. fulvitarsis , for example, the mesosternal process ( Figs. 60–61 View FIGURES 60–62 ) is very wide, anterior margin swollen and rounded, not concave at front and rostrum uni- or tricarinate ( Fig. 62 View FIGURES 60–62 ). These characteristics are in fact intraspecific variations of males and females and also large and small specimens.
