( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 H, 2H, 3H)
Nematopaguroides fagei Forest & Saint Laurent, 1968: 157 View in CoL , figs 136–141. — Coelho & Ramos-Porto, 1986: 43. — Rieger, 1998: 417. — Melo, 1999: 116, fig. 62. — McLaughlin et al., 2010: 31.
Material examined. Brazil: São Paulo – Proj. REVIZEE, st. 6658, 3 spec. (MZUSP-13908). Unknown locality: 17 spec. (MZUSP-13364).
Diagnosis. Shield slightly longer than broad. Rostrum rounded, slightly exceeding lateral projections. Ocular peduncles long, cylindrical, corneae weakly dilated; ocular acicles triangular, broad at base, with rounded tip, and with subdistal spine inserted ventrally. Chelipeds unequal, right larger and stronger than left. Right cheliped with 2 lateral rows of spiniform tubercles on dorsal face of carpus; dorsal face of palm convex, with tubercles. Males with 1 right sexual tube. Telson divided by broad shallow cleft into 2 asymmetrical lobes; posterior margin of lobes armed with 4 or 5 spines.
Distribution. Western Atlantic– Brazil (from Pernambuco to São Paulo).
Habitat. From shallow waters to 40 m. On muddy and rocky bottoms, calcareous algae and corals.
Remarks. Nematopaguroides fagei and N. pusillus are the only species known within this genus and are also closely allied, but can be differentiated quickly by the sexual tubes. N. fagei bears only one sexual tube, whereas N. pusillus has two well-developed sexual tubes.
