Type Locality: " Mexico "; restricted by Nelson (1909:122) to southern end of Mexican Tableland.

Vernacular Names: White-sided Jackrabbit.

Subspecies: :

Subspecies Lepus callotis subsp. gaillardi Mearns 1896

Distribution: C Oaxaca ( Mexico) north discontinuously to SW New Mexico ( USA).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Subgenus Proeulagus ( Gureev, 1964) , or Macrotolagus ( Averianov, 1998). Includes gaillardi and mexicanus ; see Anderson and Gaunt (1962) and Hall (1981:328-330); but see also Gureev (1964:192, 195). Range allopatric with L. alleni , to which it is probably related. Karyotype reported by Gonzalez and Cervantes (1996). Reviewed by Best and Henry (1993 b, Mammalian Species, 442).
