Magnolia macrophylla Michaux (1803: 327) .

Type (lectotype here designated):― USA. Tennessee: in territorio occidentali Tennessée juxta fluvium hujusdem nominis, s.d., Michaux s.n. (P-00734810!, image of the lectotype available at http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1443576076313TABxb12XyGiy3 C 0 K).

Nomenclatural notes: ―The protologue of Magnolia macrophylla ( Michaux 1803: 327) consisted of a short diagnosis, a description and the provenance (“ HAB. In regionibus occidentalibus fluvio Tennessée trajectis”). There are two specimens at P (barcodes 00734810, and 00734811, images respectively available at http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/ 1443576076313TABxb12XyGiy3 C 0 K, and http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1443576087152giKTjz4xumqmop55), each one bearing two leaves, which features match the protologue and the labels “ Magnolia macrophylla Michaux | in territorio occidentali Tennessée juxta fluvium hujusdem nominis ” (P-00734810), and “ Magnolia macrophylla | Amer. Sept. [= America Septentrionalis]| Michaux ” (P-00734811). Although the collection dates are lacking, we can state that the specimens are a prior-to-1803 addition to the collection and original material for the name. In fact, Michaux made expeditions in North America during the period 1785–1786 ( Stafleu & Cowan 1981: 456), and the collections of M. macrophylla in the Tennessee valley were made prior to Michaux`s publication, Flora Boreali-Americana in 1803. According to Arts. 9.2, and 9.3 of ICN, we here designate P-00734810 as the lectotype of Magnolia macrophylla .
