Nanina View in CoL ? kivi Gray, 1843

Pl. 14, fig. B

Gray [in Dieffenbach], 1843b. Catalogue of the species of Mollusca. In: Travels in New Zealand, Volume 2: 262.

Type material: Holotype, by monotypy, listed in the NHMUK accessions register for Mollusca as ‘ Nanina kivi , 1842.11.7.140’; no material with that registration number was found during a search of the type collection in 2018, and its whereabouts is unknown.

Type locality: ‘New Zealand’ (Gray [in Dieffenbach] 1843b: 262).

Previous illustrations of type material: Smith (1874 pl. 1, fig. 1) .

Remarks: The original description of Nanina ? kivi , which was reproduced by Gray (1844: 453), was based on a single specimen (see Gray 1850: 164), obtained by Dr. Andrew Sinclair on a trip to New Zealand in 1841–1842, and presented to the British Museum. There are no locality details for the type material other than ‘New Zealand’ listed by Gray in Dieffenbach (1843b) and the museum accessions register for Mollusca (i.e., 1842.11.7.140). This species has a distribution extending throughout much of the northern and central North Island (below), and Sinclair probably obtained the type at either Bay of Islands or Auckland (see Introduction for itinerary). A specimen of Nanina ? kivi in NHMUK that has the label details ‘ kivi, Gray , New Zealand, Dr. A. Sinclair, R.N.’ (NHMUK 20040941) was presumably collected by Sinclair sometime between 1843 and 1856 (see Introduction). Nanina ? kivi Gray, 1843 is the type species of Carthaea Hutton, 1884 (non Walker, 1858), by monotypy, and of Serpho Hutton, 1904 (replacement name for Carthaea Hutton ). Helix irradiata Gould, 1846 and H. radiaria Pfeiffer, 1855 are junior synonyms of Gray’s species ( Hutton, 1884b: 189; Hedley & Suter, 1893: 633; Suter, 1894d: 247, 1913b: 653).

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Serpho kivi (Gray, 1843) by Hutton (1904: 461), Suter (1913b: 653), Powell (1979: 323) and Spencer et al. (2009: 216).

Distribution: New Zealand; northern North Island ( Suter 1913b; Powell 1979).
