Pupa novoseelandica Pfeiffer, 1853 View in CoL
Pl. 6, fig. C
Pfeiffer, 1853a. Monographia heliceorum viventium, 3: 530.
Type material: Syntypes, NHMUK 1974046 About NHMUK (1) , NHMUK 1974047 About NHMUK (3) (dry shell material) ; ex Museum Cuming (Acc. no. 1829).
Label details: ‘N.Z’.
Type locality: ‘Nova Seelandia’ ( Pfeiffer 1853a: 531).
Previous illustrations of type material: Küster (1852 [in 1841–1855]: pl. 17, figs. 18, 19), Reeve (1875: pl. 14, fig. 126).
Remarks: Pupa novoseelandica Küster, 1852 and P. novoseelandica Pfeiffer, 1853 , are based on the same type material, which H. Cuming had obtained from the Australian-based naturalist Frederick Strange. Pfeiffer evidently intended to publish the original description of this species in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London issue for 1851 (see Küster, 1852 [in 1841–1855]: 135; Pfeiffer, 1853a: 531), but publication was delayed until 1854 ( Pfeiffer 1854b: 149), and was pre-empted by Küster (1852 [in 1841–1855]: 135). Authorship of Pupa novoseelandica has generally been attributed to Pfeiffer (e.g., Hector, 1873: 22; Hutton, 1880: 15; Suter, 1913b: 697; Climo, 1970a: 333; Powell, 1979: 311; Spencer et al., 2009: 216), but Küster (1852) has priority.
Taxonomy: Pupa novoseelandica Pfeiffer, 1853 is a junior primary homonym and an objective junior synonym of Phenacharopa novoseelandica (Küster, 1852) N. syn.
