Helix auklandica Le Guillou, 1842
Le Guillou, 1842. Revue Zoologique par La Société Cuvierienne, 1842: 140.
Type material: Whereabouts not known but, as noted below, possibly MNHN-IM-2000-27776 (4) and/or MNHN- IM-2000-27777 (2) (dry shell material) .
Type locality: ‘îles Aukland’ ( Le Guillou 1842: 140).
Remarks: Le Guillou’s description of Helix auklandica was based on material collected at Auckland Islands in 1840, during a visit by Dumont D’Urville’s ‘South Pole’ expedition. The original description of H. auklandica gives identical shell dimensions to those of H. antipoda Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841 , suggesting that the former species may have been based on the same specimens as those in one or both syntype lots of H. antipoda (i.e., MNHN-IM- 2000-27776, MNHN-IM-2000-27777), which were sent to MNHN in 1841 at the completion of the expedition (see Clark & Crosnier 2000: 419). There are no published illustrations of the type material of H. auklandica .
Current Taxonomy: Treated as a junior synonym of Helix antipoda Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841 by Suter (1909a: 35, 1913b: 655) and Powell (1955: 123, 1979: 317).
