Pl. 8, fig. G
Pfeiffer, 1857. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 25: 108.
Type material: Syntypes (2), NHMUK 20150017 About NHMUK (dry shell material); ex Museum Cuming (Acc. no. 1829) .
Label details: ‘ H. sciadium Pfr , New Zeland’—in Pfeiffer’s handwriting.
Type locality: ‘New Zealand’ ( Pfeiffer 1857b: 108).
Remarks: Type material of Helix sciadium is illustrated here for the first time (pl. 8, fig. G). Cumber (1967b) noted that there is marked variation in shell form, sculpture and coloration among local populations of this species, and thus it may be possible to determine the provenance of the type material from a comparison of shell morphology.
Current Taxonomy: Listed as Phrixgnathus sciadium (Pfeiffer, 1857) by Hutton (1884b: 197), Suter (1904a: 61), Spencer & Willan (1995: 42) and Spencer et al. (2009: 217).
Distribution: New Zealand; North Island, north of Auckland ( Suter 1913b; Cumber 1967b; Powell 1979).
