Vitrina kermadeensis Smith, 1873
Pl. 16, fig. E
Smith, 1873. Annals and Magazine of Natural History , Series 4, 11: 288 .
Type material: Syntypes (3), NHMUK 1873.3 About NHMUK .20.1 (dry shell material) .
Label details: ‘V. kermandecensis Smith, May 1873, the types, Hab. Sunday Is., Kermandec Group, 550 miles North East of New Zealand, the animal is eaten by the natives’.
Type locality: ‘ Sunday [= Raoul] Island, Kermadees (sic)’ ( Smith 1873: 288) .
Remarks: Type material of this species has not been illustrated previously. Vitrina kermadeensis Smith, 1873 and Vitrina ultima Mousson, 1873 are conspecific, according to Iredale (1913). Smith’s description was published on 1 April 1873 (see Evenhuis 2003: 26), and Mousson’s on 18 April 1873 ( Fischer-Piette 1937: 90), so Smith’s name has priority, as noted by Iredale (1913: 364). The original spelling of the species name kermadeensis was emended to kermadecensis by Iredale (1913: 371) and subsequent authors. Because the latter spelling has been in prevailing use since 1913 it qualifies as a justified emendation of the original species name (ICZN Article 33.2.3.1). Vitrina kermadecensis Smith, 1873 is the type species of Kermarion Iredale, 1944 , by original designation.
Current Taxonomy: Listed as Kermarion kermadecensis ( Smith, 1873) by Iredale (1944: 329) and Spencer et al. (2009: 216).
Distribution: Kermadec Islands; Raoul Island ( Smith 1873; Iredale 1913, 1915b; Oliver 1915).
