Fringilla pileata Wied, 1821: 160 ( Barra da Vareda View in CoL ).
Now Coryphospingus pileatus pileatus ( Wied, 1821) View in CoL . See Hellmayr, 1938: 379–380, and Dickinson, 2003: 802.
SYNTYPES: AMNH 4618 About AMNH , [male] ; AMNH 4619 About AMNH , [male] ; AMNH 4621 About AMNH , male, collected at Barra da Vareda View in CoL , Rio Pardo , southern Bahia , Brazil, by Maximilian , Prince of Wied. From the Maximilian Collection .
COMMENTS: Allen (1889b: 225–226) listed these three syntypes from the Maximilian Collection but gave the type locality as Campos Geraës , Bahia. This was undoubtedly based on Wied’s (1830: 605) statement: ‘‘Dieser niedliche Fink lebt im inneren Brasilien, wo ich ihn in den grossen Campos Geraës im Sertong der Provinz Bahiá, an den Gränzen von Minas Geraës antraf.’’ Only AMNH 4621 About AMNH still bears an original label, which is pasted to the reverse of the AMNH label ; the other two are in male plumage.
Paynter and Traylor (1991) equated Barra da Vareda with Inhobim, 15.15S, 40.57W.
