Small, shrubby, often cushion-like plants. Leaves usually opposite, mucronate. Flowers in the axils of new upper branches, solitary, subtended by 2 bracteoles; perianth subglobular, 5-lobed, lobes free, papyraceous, with horizontal wings at apex; stamens 5; disk present; connective often with indistinct appendages. Embryo plano-spiral. Nine spp., W Asia.
