Laneganus Johnson, 2021 (in Mathison 2021).

The single Montana species in this genus, Laneganus rupestris (Germar) , is a taxonomical conundrum. The concept used by Lane (1971) and Van Dyke (1932) match the specimens on hand in the MTEC that clearly belong to Laneganus as recently defined in Mathison (2021), based on the medial shallowly caniculate pronotum that widens at anterior third, and similarity to the type species. However, the species L. rupestris was placed within the genus Brownia by Johnson (in Mathison 2021) without comment. The original description describes a dark red-brown beetle approximately 10 mm in length that was collected in Oregon. The overall description matches the concept used here, but slightly underestimates the size of typical Montana specimens examined. The type specimen resides in Berlin, but the collection is currently undergoing renovations and types are inaccessible until late 2022. We consider this usage as retaining historical concepts of the species rather than an official transfer until the type can be examined.
