TYPE LOCALITY: "Asia", fixed by Thomas (1911a: 135) as "Bengal" [ India] .

DISTRIBUTION: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, Laos, India, Indonesia (Sumatra), Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, and republics of the former USSR. Formerly found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Indonesia (Java and Bali).

STATUS: CITES - Appendix I; U.S. ESA and IUCN - Endangered.

COMMENTS: Revised by Pocock (1929), and Mazäk (1979, 1981 [Mammalian Species, 152]). Placed in Panthera by Pocock (1929), Weigel (1961), Hemmer (1978), Kratochvfl (1982c), and Groves (1982a).
