TYPE SPECIES: Lutra concolor Rafinesque, 1832 (= Lutra cinerea View in CoL liliger, 1815).

SYNONYMS: Leptonyx Lesson, 1842 ; Micraonyx J.A. Allen, 1919 .

COMMENTS: Osgood (1932), Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951), Coetzee (19776), and Meester et al. (1986) considered Amblonyx Rafinesque, 1832 , as congeneric with Aonyx ; here separated based on Harris (1968), van Zyll de Jong (1972, 1987), and Medway (1977).
