TYPE SPECIES: Canis familiaris Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL (= Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL ) by Linnean tautonomy ( Melville and Smith, 1987).

COMMENTS: Van Gelder (1978) included Alopex , Atelocynus , Cerdocyon , Pseudalopex , Lycalopex, Dusicyon , and Vulpes as subgenera. However, this arrangement is not currently employed by most mammalogists ( Berta, 1987, 1988; Corbet, 1978c; Corbet and Hill, 1980; Gromov and Baranova, 1981; Hall, 1981; Wozencraft, 1989b).
