TYPE SPECIES: Cryptoprocta ferox Bennett, 1833 , by original designation ( Melville and Smith, 1987).

COMMENTS: Beaumont (1964) placed Cryptoprocta with the Felidae because of similarities in dental characters. Albignac (1970), Thenius (1972), Radinsky (1975), Coetzee (1977b), Flynn et al. (1988), and Wozencraft (1989a, b) placed it in the Viverridae ; Hemmer (1978) suggested an intermediate position.
