Basionym: Pholidota sigmatochilus J.J.Sm., Blumea 5: 299 (1943).

Homotypic synonyms: Sigmatochilus kinabaluensis Rolfe, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 42: 155 (1914). Chelonistele kinabaluensis (Rolfe) de Vogel, Blumea 30: 203 (1984). Coelogyne alimii R.Rice, Photo Intro Asian Bulbophyllum Coelogyne Dendrobium Orchids : 171 (2019), nom. superfl.

Notes: not Coelogyne kinabaluensis Ames & C.Schweinf. in O.Ames, Orchidaceae 6: 30 (1920). When Smith transferred this species to Pholidota , he had to give it a new name due to pre-existing Pholidota kinabaluensis Ames , Orchidaceae 6: 68 (1920). When Rice transferred this species to Coelogyne , he also could not use this original epithet and chose a new name, but he should instead have picked up Smith’s epithet, a later synonym based on the same type.
