Type Locality: Tanzania, Nguru Mtns, Monda.

Vernacular Names: Single-Striped Lemniscomys.

Synonyms: Lemniscomys calidior ( Thomas and Wroughton 1908) ; Lemniscomys dorsalis (Smith 1845) ; Lemniscomys fitzsimonsi Roberts 1915 ; Lemniscomys maculosus ( Osgood 1910) ; Lemniscomys mearnsi Heller 1914 ; Lemniscomys phaeotis (Thomas 1910) ; Lemniscomys sabiensis Roberts 1946 ; Lemniscomys sabulatus Thomas 1927 ; Lemniscomys spinalis Thomas 1916 ; Lemniscomys zuluensis Roberts 1931 .

Distribution: N Namibia, South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West provinces; de Graaff, 1997 d; Taylor, 1998), E Swaziland, Zimbabwe, C and N Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and S Kenya; range inadequately resolved.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Once included in L. griselda (G. M. Allen, 1939) , but now considered a distinct species most closely related to L. griselda and L. roseveari ( Van der Straeten, 1980 b) ; see account of L. griselda . Karyotype (2n = 54, FN = 64) for samples from NE Tanzania reported by Fadda et al. (2001 b). Populations in Southern African Subregion reviewed by de Graaff (1997 d).
