Discussion: Subgenus Sorex , S. gracillimus group. Karyotype has 2n = 36, FN = 62 (Sakhalin). This species has long been included in minutus but its specific status is now widely accepted on the basis of penial (Dolgov and Lukanova, 1966) and cranial (Hutterer, 1979) morphology, karyotype ( Orlov and Bulatova, 1983), and allozyme data ( George, 1988). The inclusion of hyojironis follows Corbet (1978 c) and is tentative. Okhotina (1993) studied the geographic variation of the species. One of the subspecies that she distinguished requires renaming ( Hutterer and Zaitsev, 2004). A study of mtDNA variation over most of its range was performed by Ohdachi et al. (2001).
