Nanshanentulus urumchiensis , new species

Description. Adult. Body length 1423 – 1585 µm (n=13).

Head— Elliptic, length 135 – 143 µm, width 93 – 105 µm (n=13). Postpseudocular seta present. Setae ls and a short. Dorsal and ventral side of head with no modified setae ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Pseudoculus length 7.5 µm, width 7.5 – 10 µm. PR=18 – 19 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Canal of maxillary gland broad and posterior filament slightly bulked and slightly split into two leaves. Calyx with two lateral racemose appendices. Posterior filament of maxillary gland length 35 – 37.5 µm. CF=3.6 – 4.1( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Maxillary palp with two sensilla, parallel-side and subequal ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Labial palp well developed, with apical tuft. ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ).

Thorax— Chaetotaxy as shown in Table 3 View TABLE 3 . Mesonotum and metanotum with three pairs of anterior setae (A2, A3 and A4), setae P1a and P2a short and small, P5a short cone-shaped. Length ratio of P1: P1a: P2 on mesonotum as 4.4 – 5: 1: 6.7 – 8.Pronotum with no pores, mesonotum with pore al and l, metanotum with pore l. Prosternum and mesosternum with no pores. Metasternum with one middle pore.

Foretarsal length 95 – 103 µm, claw length 20 – 27.5 µm, with one inner flap. TR =3.5 – 4.2; Empodium length 5 µm, EU=0.18 – 0.25; S-shaped seta length 20 – 25 µm. Dorsal sensillum t-1 short, baculiform, BS=0.73 – 0.82; t-2 slim; t-3 small and lanceolate. Exterior sensillum a broad, surpassing base of c and d; b robust, reaching base of 4; c bulked, claviform; d broad and long, slightly surpassing base of g, nearer to e than to c; sensillum e short and broad; f slightly surpassing base of claw; g short. Interior sensillum a' broad, near to t-1; b' absent; c' thin and long, its apex surpassing base of claw. Length formula of foretarsal sensilla as: t-3 <t-1 <e <c <g <d = t-2 = a' <b <a = c' <f ( Figs. 32 – 33 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Middle tarsal length 45 – 50 µm, claw length 17.5 – 20 µm. Hind tarsal length 50 – 57.5µm, claw length 17.5 – 22.5 µm.

Abdomen —Chaetotaxy as shown in Table 3 View TABLE 3 . Urotergite I with two pairs of anterior setae (A1, A2), with six pair of posterior setae, posterior P1a lacked. Urotergites II – VI with four pairs of anterior setae (A1, A2, A4 and A5) and P1a lacked. Seta P3 on urotergites II – VII situated subequal to level of P2. Urotergite VII with eight posterior setae, P1a present. Accessory setae on urotergites II – VI short hair-like, on VII also short hairlike and slightly longer than on II – VI. Urotergite I with pore psm, other pores absent. Urotergites II – VI with pores al and psm. Urotergite VII with pore psm, al absent.

Abdominal legs II – III long, with two subequal setae. Accessory setae on urosternites I – VII short hair-like. Urosternites I – III with no pores. Urosternites IV – V with one middle pore. Urosternites VI – VII with one or two asymmetrical pores.

Striate band on abdominal segment VIII well developed. The anterior part of urotergite and urosternite VIII with 3 – 4 rows of granules. Segment VIII with paired pore psm on urotergite and without pores on urosternite ( Figs. 34 – 35 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Comb on abdomen VIII rectangular, with 8 – 10 similar teeth on hind margin ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ).

Segments IX – XI without pores on urotergites and urosternites. Seta 1 and seta 2 on urotergite IX in equal length. Segment XI with 3 + 3 short setae on urotergite, and setae 1 and 3 on urosternite long. Seta 1 on urotergite XII very short, 2 and 3 long. Single middle pore present on the urotergite XII, and paired pores al also present on urosternite XII ( Figs. 34 – 35 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ).

Female squama genitalis robust and with short blunt acrostyli ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 27 – 38 ). Penis of male as show in Fig. 38 View FIGURES 27 – 38 . Younger instars. The measurements and indexes of younger instars as show in the Table 4 View TABLE 4 .

Chaetal variability— Chaetal variation is very frequent in this species. Of the 15 imagoes examined, chaetotaxial variations were observed in 10 specimens, for example, absence of A2 on metanotum, asymmetric absence of A3, A4 on urotergites V and VI, or asymmetric absence of seta 3 on urosternite XI and so on. An interesting variation is that two specimens asymmetrically with three setae (one subapical and two apical setae) on abdominal leg II (in W0613 on the right, in W0614 on the left). All maturus juniors with chaetotaxial variations, such as asymmetric absence of P1a on urosternite III, asymmetric absence of P2a on urosternite IV, absence of Pc on urosternite II, etc. In one larva II (W0635), A4 was absent. In preimago and Larva I, no chaetotaxial variations were observed.

Holotype— female (mounted) (No: W0614), from coniferous forest of Mt. Nanshan, 43 o 25' 338 N, 87 o 09' 875 E, 2100 m alt., Urumchi, Xinjiang Province, China, 21-V-2006, collected by Dr. Yun-Xia Luan, Yan Gao and Yun Bu.

Paratypes— 6 females (No: W0606, W0613, W0619, W0 620, W0621, W0623), 4 males (No: W0603, W0622, W0624, W0629) (mounted), same data as for holotype.

Other specimens examined— 4 females (No: W0605, W0625, W0 628, W0645), 2 preimagoes (No: W0634, W0627) (male), 3 maturus juniors (No: W0608, W0626, W0636), 4 Larvae II (No: W0635, W0637, W0638, W0639), 2 Larvae I (No: W0607, W0610), same data as for holotype.

Etymology. The species name derived from Urumchi city where the Nanshan mountain located.

Distribution. Xinjiang Province, Northwest China.
