Alampyris bicolor View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figs. 50–53 View FIGURES 46 – 58. 46 – 49 )
Description. Integument dark-brown; vertex black; scape with large orange distal maculae ventrally, gradually brown towards inner side, dorsally black; pedicel with basal orange ring; antennomere III with narrow basal orange ring, nearly all ventral side brown, except for narrow black ring at apex; antennomere IV orange with narrow darker ring at apex; antennomere V reddish-brown at base, gradually becoming darker brown, with narrow black ring at apex; antennomeres VI–XI dark-brown; pronotum black medially, lighter towards sides; elytra with lighter brown band along humeral carina; coxae light brown at base, gradually orange towards apex; pro- and mesofemora with basal two-thirds orange, irregularly reddish to dark-brown on distal one-third; metafemora orange on basal half, gradually reddish-brown to dark-brown towards apex; tibiae orange at base and most of inner side basally; dorsal surface of tarsomeres I–II mostly orange; about two-thirds of tarsomere V orange basally.
Head. Frons rectangular, wider than long; dense pubescence whitish-yellow to yellow depending on angle of light source, obscuring integument; with moderately long, sparse setae. Antennal tubercles with pubescence as on frons. Coronal suture distinct from clypeus to anterior edge of prothorax. Vertex coarsely, sparsely punctate; centrally with large brown pubescent triangular area, distinctly not obscuring integument; remaining surface densely, whitish-yellow pubescent; with long, moderately abundant setae intermixed; area behind distal half of inferior ocular lobes and genae with dense, yellowish pubescence. Distance between superior ocular lobes equal to 0.3 times scape length; distance between inferior ocular lobes, in frontal view, equal to 0.7 times scape length. Antennae as long as 1.5 times elytral length, attaining elytral apex about middle of antennomere IX; ventral side of scape, pedicel, and antennomeres III–IV with long, moderately abundant setae; antennomeres antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.76; pedicel = 0.18; IV = 0.79; V = 0.57; VI = 0.51; VII = 0.45; VIII = 0.44; IX = 0.36; X = 0.33; XI = 0.33.
Thorax. Prothorax laterally rounded. Pronotum coarsely, sparsely punctate on central disk, distinctly denser, somewhat finer laterally; pubescence brown, not obscuring integument, a large sub-triangular area on disc, whitishyellow, densely pubescent, obscuring integument on each side of this area; long, sparse setae intermixed. Sides of prothorax, moderately coarsely, punctate; pubescence brown, not obscuring integument. Pubescence on ventral side of thorax yellow-brown, very distinct, but not obscuring integument. Elytra coarsely, densely punctate; pubescence yellow-brown, short, not obscuring integument except on narrow, short band of humerus; humeral carina distinct from base to distal one-fourth; apices individually rounded.
Abdomen. Urosternites with pubescence similar to ventral surface of thorax. Legs. Metatarsomere I as long as 0.85 times II–III together.
Type material. Holotype male from COSTA RICA, Puntarenas: San Luis Valley, (vicinity of Ecolodge San Luis, 1,100 m), 21–25.VI.1995, Louis M. La Pierre col. ( USNM).
Dimensions in mm (male). Total length, 6.90; length of prothorax at center, 1.20; anterior width of prothorax, 1.30; posterior width of prothorax, 1.45; humeral width, 1.85; elytral length, 5.30.
Diagnosis. Alampyris bicolor is similar to A. fuscus Martins & Galileo, 2008 , but differs as follows: body slender; elytra about 3.0 times as long as length of head + prothorax; elytra without dense pubescence laterally. In A. fuscus , the body is more robust, the elytra is about 2.8 times as long as head plus prothorax, and has very distinct and dense pubescence laterally.
Remarks. Currently Alampyris Bates, 1881 encompasses 11 species from Mexico and Central America.
Etymology. Latin, bicolor = of two colors; relating to the femoral color.
