This species parasitizes birds and mammals from all continents except Antarctica according to morphological evidence (see Pinto et al. (2022)). Thus far, it has been unclear whether there exists a complex of closely related species or a single species that is globally distributed. Recently, identical CO1 sequences were reported from specimens collected from the domestic cat, Felis catus ( Pinto et al., 2018) , and the American kestrel, Falco sparverius ( Pinto et al., 2022) , both from Brazil.

The CO1 sequences reported here from specimens collected from Falco tinnunculus of European origin ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) were identical to those from Brazil. Therefore, molecular evidence supports both a broad host range and global distribution of P. illiciens .
