Genus Grubeosyllis Verrill, 1900 View in CoL
Grubeosyllis Verrill, 1900: 628 View in CoL ±629. Type species: Syllis clavata ClapareÁde, 1863: 41 View in CoL , pl. XIII, ®gures 28, 29; designated by San MartõÂn, 1991: 716. San MartõÂn, 1991: 716±721, ®gures 1±3.
Diagnosis
Small and slender worms, body surface smooth. Prostomium semicircular, with two pairs of lensed eyes and, sometimes, two anterior ocular spots. Palps fused for, at least, most of their length. Three antennae, two pairs of tentacular cirri, and dorsal cirri long and slender, fusiform; dorsal cirri present in all chaetigers or missing in chaetiger 2. Ventral cirri digitiform. Compound falcigers, dorsal and ventral simple chaetae present. Acicula acuminate, with long, ®liform tip; in some species, tips distally rounded, but not hollow. Pharynx wide, armed with one dorsal tooth; proventriculum proportionally long and wide.
San MartõÂn (1984a) split the former genus Brania Quatrefages, 1866 , into Brania and Pseudobrania San MartõÂn, 1984a, later Grubeosyllis Verrill, 1900 (see San MartõÂn, 1991), and re-diagnosed the ®rst genus as animals with palps fused in the proximal third, tentacular and dorsal cirri short, and acicula distally rounded, with a hollow concavity inside. In spite of the general resemblance between these two genera, San MartõÂn (1991) considered Grubeosyllis more closely related to Parapionosyllis Fauvel, 1923 than to Brania , due to reproductive patterns.
This is the ®rst occurence of this genus in Brazilian waters.
