Type locality. Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania), Făget Basin .

Type stratum. Silt and clay of the Dej Formation.

Age. Middle Miocene, early/middle Badenian (Langhian).

Etymology. vinculum, Latin for band or bond, referring to the band-like spiral cords; noun in apposition.

Diagnosis. Small slender fusiform shell with high spire, long siphonal canal strongly convex teleoconch whorls, characterized by strongly raised axial ribs crossed by broad elevated spiral cords, very prominent in interspaces between axial ribs, aperture narrow with three weak columellar denticles and prominent lirae within outer lip.

Description. Small slender fusiform shell of up to six teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~35°. Protoconch high conical of 3.5 moderately convex whorls, diameter 800 μm, height 1100 μm. Last protoconch whorl with weak axial folds close to transition to teleoconch. Early teleoconch whorls moderately convex with raised, prominent, widely spaced axial ribs. Spiral sculpture of two weak spiral cords below adapical suture and three prominent spiral cords below. Suture deeply incised, undulating. Later teleoconch whorls strongly convex with eight widely spaced, strongly raised axial ribs separated by wider interspaces. Axial ribs overrun by prominent, elevated spiral cords continuing in full strength in axial interspaces, resulting in deep, cancellate sculpture, with delicate growth lines in rectangular interspaces. Last whorl attaining ~55% of total height, strongly convex, with eight axial ribs; base strongly constricted with prominent primary and secondary spiral cords; fasciole indistinct. Aperture narrowly pyriform. Columellar callus forming broad rim, sharply delimited from base. Columella moderately and widely excavated, with three weak columellar denticles on abapical half, weakly twisted at fasciole. Anal canal wide, accentuated by weak parietal denticle. Outer lip thickened by terminal varix with prominent lirae extending deep within aperture. Siphonal canal long, moderately narrow, straight or deflected to the left.

Discussion. Landau et al. (2013) and Kovács (2022) synonymized this species with Takashius ligusticus ( Bellardi, 1884) , described from the Pliocene of the Po Basin. Although the two are indeed very similar, Takashius vinculum nov. sp. differs from Takashius ligusticus in its higher spire, more convex early teleoconch whorls, broader and more sharply delimited spiral cords, and narrower aperture (see Bellardi 1884: 46, pl. 2, fig. 25; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981: 145, pl. 40, fig. 2). Takashius cognatus ( Bellardi, 1884) , from the Tortonian of Stazzano ( Italy) is also reminiscent of T. vinculum but has a broader spire, more widely spaced axial ribs on the last whorl, a wider aperture and develops narrower spiral cords (see Bellardi 1884: pl. 2, fig. 24; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981: 144, pl. 40, fig. 3). Takashius vinculum was confused with the Pliocene Mediterranean Parvofusus lamellosus ( Borson, 1821) by many authors, but the Pliocene species differs in its wider spire, less convex whorls, weaker spiral sculpture, shorter siphonal canal and, most importantly, lacks columellar folds (see Tabanelli 2014: pl. 3, figs 3–5).

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic; the occurrences at Steinebrunn ( Austria) suggest the presence of sea grass (own data M.H.)

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Lysice ( Czech Republic) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890); Vienna Basin: Niederleis, Steinebrunn, Vienna /Pötzleinsdorf ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890), Porzteich at Břeclav ( Czech Republic) (hoc opus); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Forchtenau ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890), Sopron ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966); Pannonian Basin: Letkés, Mátraverebély, Szob ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966; Kovács & Vicián 2023); Cserhát Mountains: Keletcserhát ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Făget Basin: Lăpugiu de Sus, CoŞteiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Kovács 2022); Dacian Basin: Urovene, Opanec ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960).
