Type locality. Baden ( Austria), Vienna Basin .

Type stratum. Silt and clay of the Baden Formation.

Age. Middle Miocene, middle Badenian (Langhian).

Etymology. In honor of Peter Stahlschmidt (University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany), in recognition of his contributions to fasciolariid taxonomy.

Diagnosis. Medium-sized, slender fusiform shell with convex, slightly shouldered whorls with distinctly concave subsutural ramp and two to three prominent spiral cords along periphery, aperture narrowly pyriform, with weak parietal denticle, no columellar folds, and smooth outer lip.

Description. Medium-sized, slender fusiform shell of up to eight teleoconch whorls; apical angle37°. Protoconch high conical, poorly preserved, of more than two weakly convex whorls, diameter 1100 μm. Early teleoconch whorls with two prominent spiral cords placed mid-whorl and slightly below, and third weaker cord on convex subsutural ramp. Axial ribs strengthening on third teleoconch whorl, adapically weakening over subsutural ramp, separated by wider interspaces. Later teleoconch whorls with narrow subsutural collar, distinctly concave subsutural ramp, angled at shoulder, strongly convex below. Suture deeply incised, undulating. Numerous weak, narrow, flattened spiral cords on subsutural ramp, two to three prominent spiral cords at peripheral (central cord coinciding with angulation) with weaker secondary cord intercalated, spiral cords slightly swollen over ribs. Last whorl attaining ~65% of total height, with concave subsutural ramp, angled at periphery; spiral sculpture on subsutural ramp weak; axial ribs confined to periphery, forming low axial nodes crossed by two more prominent spiral cords resulting is somewhat bifid nodes; base convex, strongly constricted; base and siphonal canal with numerous cords of alternating strength; fasciole indistinct. Aperture moderately narrow, pyriform. Columellar callus forming narrow rim adherent in parietal area. Columella smooth, slightly twisted at transition to siphonal canal. Anal canal weakly incised, accentuated by tiny parietal denticle. Outer lip thin, smooth within. Siphonal canal long, straight, narrow.

Discussion. This species was confused by Hörnes (1853) with Fusus bilineatus Naumann, 1852 , which resulted in the erroneous designation of the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853: pl. 32, fig. 11) as paralectotype of Pseudolatirus bilineatus by Stahlschmidt & Fraussen, 2012. Pseudolatirus bilineatus differs distinctly from Pseudofusus stahlschmidti nov. sp. in its protoconch with axial ribs, the absence of secondary spiral cords on teleoconch whorls, and the presence of columellar folds. Fraudifusinus crispoides ( Kittl, 1887) is very similar but has weaker secondary spiral cords, much more prominent primary cords on the siphonal canal, which is shorter. Moreover, it lacks the the columellar denticles and the peculiar denticles at the transition from outer lip to siphonal canal typical for Fraudifusinus .

Specimens from the Bükk Mountains in Hungary, described by Csepreghy-Meznerics (1969, 1970, 1972) as Lathyrus fornicatus are Pseudofusus stahlschmidti nov. sp. Pseudofusus fornicatus ( Bellardi, 1884) from the Tortonian of the S. Agata ( Italy), differs in its regularly convex whorls and its ribs, which are axially aligned (see Bellardi 1884: pl. 2, fig. 29; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981: pl. 40, fig. 6).

Paleoenvironment. Occurrences in the Baden Formation of the Vienna Basin suggest middle to outer neritic environments in up to 250 m water depth ( Kranner et al. 2021).

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Baden ( Austria) (hoc opus); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972).
