Neotype designated herein, NHMW 1855/0045/0721 (A 920), SL: 91.5 mm, MD: 33.6 mm, Grund ( Austria), illustrated in Hörnes 1853: 293, pl. 32, fig. 5), Figs 14C View FIGURE 14 1 –C View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 . The illustrations in Naumann (1852) were provided by Paul Maria Partsch (1791–1856) and Moritz Hörnes (1815–1868) (see Naumann 1854: 1963, footnote) and were based on material from the Natural History Museum Vienna. The manuscript of Partsch with these illustrations is still preserved and the material was later published by Hörnes (1853). Nevertheless, it is not possible to identify the specimens drawn by Partsch in the collection. Therefore, we designate the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853: pl. 32, fig. 5) as neotype.

Revised description. Large, very slender fusiform shell of up to nine teleoconch whorls; apical angle 35–38°. Protoconch very high conical of 3.5 convex whorls with pointed apex, diameter 1100 μm, height 1500 μm. Last quarter of the last protoconch whorl with orthocline axial riblets. Early teleoconch whorls shouldered mid-whorl with steep, flat subsutural ramp, sculptured by seven widely spaced axial ribs, fading over subsutural ramp; two very prominent spirals placed at shoulder and slightly below; secondary and tertiary spiral cords appear on subsutural ramp, between primary cords and above abapical suture on second and third teleoconch whorls. Suture shallowly undulating. Later teleoconch whorls with wide, slightly concave subsutural ramp, shoulder rounded to weakly angular, weakly convex below. Axial ribs fading around sixth teleoconch whorl, persisting weakly to aperture in some specimens. Spirals strongly increasing in number by intercalation of secondary and tertiary cords, separated by narrow interspaces, cords of subequal strength in some specimens. Shoulder cord and second primary occasionally more prominent, swollen over axials. Last whorl high, attaining ~67% of total height, weakly shouldered, rapidly contracting, base with numerous delicate cords of alternating strength, weakening abapically; fasciole not developed. Aperture small, elongate pyriform. Columellar callus forming thin, narrow rim, sharply delimited from siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area. Columella smooth, weakly excavated, weakly twisted at transition to siphonal canal. Anal canal poorly developed. Outer lip thin, attached distinctly below periphery of last whorl. Outer lip smooth in most specimens, occasionally bearing numerous delicate lirae extending deep within aperture. Siphonal canal very long, slender, straight, narrow.

Discussion. Bellardi (1873) recognized that the specimens illustrated by Hörnes (1853) as Fusus longirostris are not that Pliocene Mediterranean species and assumed that the Viennese specimen are conspecific with his Fusus aequistriatus . Angustifusus aequistriatus ( Bellardi, 1873) , however, differs from A. hoessii in its lower spire and the prominent axial ribs on late teleoconch whorls (see Bellardi 1873: 134, pl. 9, fig. 6; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981: 41, pl. 4, fig. 3). Grabau (1904) included Middle Miocene specimens from the Vienna Basin in his Fusus castelarquatensis , which was based on type material from the Pliocene of Italy. Angustifusus hoessii differs from Angustifusus castelarquatensis in its shouldered whorls and more prominent axial ribs on early spire whorls.

Angustifusus aturensis ( Grateloup, 1845) , from the Langhian of Saubrigues ( France) is very similar in general shape but develops fewer and more prominent spiral cords (see Peyrot 1928: pl. 6, figs 34–35). Like Angustifusus hoessii ( Naumann, 1852) it has a multispiral protoconch. We are not fully convinced that both taxa represent different species, but more material of the French species would be needed to clarify this. Provisionally we prefer to keep the Paratethyan occurrences separate. If they turn out to be conspecific, Angustifusus aturensis will have priority over A. hoessii .

Csepreghy-Meznerics (1969, 1970, 1972) identified the Paratethyan species as Angustifusus aturensis angulosus ( Peyrot, 1928) , from the Langhian of Saubrigues ( France) (which is probably a subjective junior synonym of A. aturensis ). The fragmentary specimen illustrated by Peyrot (1928: pl. 6, fig. 14) is slenderer than A. hoessii and has more prominent spiral cords.

Paleoenvironment. Occurrences in the Baden Formation of the Vienna Basin suggests middle to outer neritic environments in up to 250 m water depth ( Kranner et al. 2021).

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (Early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Kleinebersdorf ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002); Pannonian Basin: Bántapuszta ( Hungary) ( Steininger 1973). Badenian (Middle Miocene): Korytnica Basin: Korytnica ( Poland) ( Bałuk 1995); Vienna Basin: Baden-Sooss, Bad Vöslau, Möllersdorf, Niederleis ( Austria), Porzteich at Břeclav ( Czech Republic) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890); Pannonian Basin: Kismaros ( Hungary) ( Báldi & Kókay 1970); Bükk Mountains: Balaton, Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Făget Basin: Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890).
